New Restaurant: La Taperia (ex Terry's Singapore)

I love Spanish food and when I heard a new Spanish restaurant was opening in Singapore under the Les Amis group and by an established Spanish chef, I knew I was visiting this restaurant for dinner next. So on Tuesday, N and I had dinner at this beautiful place.

Its located in the "new wing" of Shaw Centre which houses new shops and restaurants and Terry's was one of them. The decor was homely, chill, and rather romantic with the dark walls and dim lights. What's a plus point is that they have a room for smokers! A stand-up table area where they can drink and smoke. Great idea we think!

Terry's is jointly opened by Mr Terry, a Spaniard who opened a chain of highly acclaimed Terry's in Manila and they aim to bring true authentic Spanish food to us without having to pay for airfare or accommodation!
[Update: Mr Terry is no longer part of this partnership and the restaurant is renamed La Taperia]

We were very warmly greeted by an extremely polite staff and seated and handed menus. We knew dinner was off to a very good start! Immediately it was - service checked!

The menu is huge! Probably the only minus point cos its a little hard to hold over the table haha. Anyway for tapas they've portioned it into "regular" and "large". The former is for 2-3 people and the latter 4-6 people. So for today's review, unless otherwise stated, all portions and prices are for regular sized.

Pre-dinner snacks - pitted olives!

La Elegancia Heca Sopa de Ostras
An elegant soup made of a melange of freshly shucked oysters and baby artichokes
$20 (one size)

We were deciding between this and the seafood soup w pumpkin puree however we decided on this in the end as we seemed the opinion of our waiter and he recommended this + told us this was a signature dish! We were apprehensive initially as we weren't sure what kind of soup it'll be i.e. clear soup or creamy or wtv and how does oyster soup w baby artichokes taste like?!

Am glad we ordered this because it was truly a surprise! The soup is a little like those sour Chinese soup but this only had a tinge of sourness, mostly sweet tasting, slightly thick soup which had carrots, lots of oysters and some artichoke slices! I would say its rather refreshing to start off with this and would order this again to let others try. Kudos for creativity :) 4.3/5

The soup came with this delicious grilled baguette that was super crispy and was hot, earning points in both our books and tummies. Went really well with the soup as well as a snack on its own. You can order this ala carte from the menu as well for about $4 I think?

Capricho De Santona
Piquillo pepper stuffed with tuna, bound with anchovy remoulade
$16

Whenever I see piquillo peppers, its a must order for me so this time was no different and we were both very satisfied with this dish! Firstly the peppers were very sweet and fragrant. Secondly the stuffed tuna was super smooth, not like those canned tuna, but you could tell it was tuna you were eating and it went really well with the peppers! I love the smooth texture of the tuna as well as the remoulade "capping" it along with the slight crunch of the pepper. However I couldn't taste anchovies though. That orange sauce tasted like bell peppers as well but a more concentrated taste and reminded me of gazpachos. I really like the combi of this dish and would definitely reorder! 4.5/5

Croquetas de Cochinillo Confitado
Crisp-tender suckling pig bechamel croquettes. A daring culinary concept
$16

Another creative take! However this did not work so well. The suckling pig was barely discernible as the sauce totally overpowered its taste and it was minced too finely that there was no crispy sucking pig texture at all. There were bits of I think chinese sausage (not sure haha) inside as well. It was very crispy and well fried though. 2.8/5

Champinones con jamon al Ajillo
Fresh mushroom and garlic silvers sauteed in extra olive oil with Jamon Serrano crowned with an organic egg yolk
$14

This was also recommended to us and being mushroom junkies we ordered it. However it was just an average dish I mean what could go wrong with mushrooms and gooey yolk porn? But this also means its difficult to make this dish memorable. It was definitely well executed so if you're craving for some nice earthy mushrooms with a flowing egg yolk - this will surely satisfy you. 3/5

Pulpo a Feira con pimenton De la Vera
The quintessential way of cooking octopus in Galicia
$18

The boy liked this dish! However I felt that we've had better octopus elsewhere. This was quite nicely done though! No tough chewy difficult to bite octopus. But I thought it was slightly bland. 3/5

Rabo de Toro en chilindron
The distinctive characteristics of this dish are rooted in the flavours released by slowly stewing oxtail with Jamon Serrano, fresh and sundried bell peppers, red Spanish wine reduction and grated dark chocolate
$28

Now this we ordered cos we were intrigued! The sauce described captured our attention - peppers, red wine, and dark chocolate?! I told him that this was a must order haha. And true enough the sauce was heaven. So full of flavour, so sweet from the carrots and the peppers I suppose + whatever else they added, but at the same time savoury cos of the beef. It was slightly thickened and we finished all of the sauce cos it was that good. Couldn't really taste the chocolate but we did find lots of chocolate bits on the beef itself! Dark chocolate mmmm :) The beef was fork tender and of course, was well perfumed by the sauce! 4.5/5

Paella Negra de marisco
A squid ink seafood paella inspired by the Siete Puertas restaurant in Barcelona
$32

This paella is much drier than the one we had at FOC and I guess this is where personal tastes takes over. Its like how you like your clay pot rice - wetter or drier. I like mine wetter but with charred bits, the boy likes drier. So he preferred this version of paella to that of FOC's but I liked FOC's better! This was a good rendition though I must say! Very well perfumed with squid ink, rather generous with the seafood as well and the rice was not overly cooked. There were a bit of charred bits too. So if you like drier paella, this is definitely a must order for you! 4/5

Helado de aceitunas Negras Confitadas
Black olive confit ice cream bathed in raisin cream showered with albarino syrup
$10

We ordered this because of the black olive confit ice cream however the ice cream did not taste like black olives although it had black olive bits in it as well. The raisin cream tasted faintly of raisin. The scoop of ice cream was quite big though so if you want ice cream to end your meal, this is a good choice. 3.5/5

Marquesa de Chocolate
Chocolate marquise topped with baked almond praline. Best seller at Terry's Philippines
$14

Now this I would say is best to be shared amongst 4 people or more. Because that chocolate marquise is basically chocolate ganache! One big chunk of it and honestly I was a little sick of it as it was shared between the 2 of us and we had quite a lot for dinner already. The almond praline really helped a lot and I loved the praline! Reminded us of popcorn and was really yummy :) 3.6/5

Overall - I really liked the food here except for desserts which weren't that satisfactory. And would definitely be back for Spanish food if I'm in the vicinity! Also, the service here is DAMN good haha there was this particular guy who was super professional, very friendly, polite and very smiley. I didn't manage to catch his name but kudos to you! You made a lasting impression on me and my boyfriend :) its really not easy to be so cheerful when work is long hours and its dreary but thanks for making people's day better with good service :)

Rather New Restaurant: Binomio

Hi everyone!

I am so happy 'cos exams are over! :) Will be blogging frequently now, am so very sorry for the slow/igiveupsheisnotgonnabloganymore.

The chef is another disciple of the late Chef Santi (so many now in Singapore) and Binomio means "duo" in Spanish 'cos their concept is a Tapas bar and a Fine-dining restaurant in the same place. Well seems like that's the new direction of Spanish restaurants haha.

Tried this restaurant some time back, I think late March-early April because I read some reviews saying its rather good, so here's what I think.

Complimentary olives

We were served this and I think its a refreshing change from the usual "complimentary" items! Sourish so it really whets your appetite. Other tables saw another complimentary item - bread basket. But somehow we were never served and we didnt bother asking cos we didnt want to waste food as we ordered quite a bit of food!

Amuse bouche

I forgot what this was and I'm terribly sorry about it! Was a veg soup from the looks of it? I remember it was kind of creamy.

Pan-fried strips of Cuttlefish, "sofrito, and emulsified veal jus
$26

This was yummy! Doesnt really feel like you're eating cuttlefish, kinda feels like Chinese noodles with a bit of wok hei haha. It was quite springy in a good way and its aroma was mmmm :) 4.2/5

Japanese eggplant terrine accompanied of crispy pork & fried squid
$26

I remember this was very yummy! Especially the eggplant omg done so soft and fragrant. The squids were crunchy and fresh too. Didnt try the pork though! 4.4/5

Pan friend Crayfish, wrapped in "iberico" pork, served with "trin chat" potato & black truffles
$32

I think this dish is not worth the $32! I mean okay crayfish but cant really tell what it is cos its wrapped in the iberico ham although the texture was that of a shellfish. The potatoes were nice though. Truffles, mm not really there haha. I think flavour wise it was okay, but not worth such a price! 3.4/5

Squid ink Paella with baby squid and clams
$70

There's no choice of size haha so the 2 of us finished this plus the above and desserts! (fatfatfat) okay so they asked if we wanted them to mix it up for us and portion it but we said we wanted to do it ourselves! They gave us sour cream later on to add if we wanted and we had to mix the rice on the pan ourselves cos it'll stick or sth haha. So the pan was really hot and we were given napkins to hold onto it and its quite a small workout haha. So how did this fare?

I thought it was a little wet for my liking, not charred enough. Squid ink taste could be stronger. But we managed to finish it still! I suggest this would be good for 3-4 people if you're ordering more dishes. 3.9/5

Here's the dessert menu cos I cant find it on the website!

Chocolate ganache croquettes with white chocolate dipping
$12

I think maybe they should change the shape of this? Haha it looks kinda bad from afar haha. Anyway these were evil little morsels that're warm, flowing with chocolate (dark!) and so crispy on the outside. The white chocolate sauce just ups the sinful level :) chocolate lovers, please stand up! But the dark chocolate may deter some though if you're not a fan. 4.3/5

Strawberry mousse tartlet, strawberry tartar, white chocolate ice cream & champagne foam
$14

I really loved this dessert! Favourite components in one hehe. Marries a few tastes and textures in one making it a light refreshing delicious dessert! The "tartlet" is not a buttery based crust its just a mousse in a circular shape haha. I loved the champagne foam which is slightly sweet but slightly bitter then the strawberries are slightly sour and the white chocolate ice cream is sweet too. 4.3/5

I feel that this restaurant has a rather nice ambience, table spacing is good. Service is polite and rather prompt. The food is rather good but prices are on the high side since its a "fine dining" restaurant!

New Restaurant: Kaixo

Another new tapas bar popped up in town! The people behind Kaixo, according to their Facebook page, started out in private dining, but now they've opened their own shop front! Serving Spanish tapas, but what's different from normal tapas joints in Singapore is that they serve Pinxtos, please look at the pic below for more details about what it is! Basically its something like a brushcetta w a variety of toppings!

The bar area and where you choose your pintxos

Here's their menu for your reference:

The paella was not available that day and we were v disappointed :/

Interesting cutlery shapes!

Pinxtos
$12 for 3
From left to right:

Avocado, Jamon, Sundried Tomato - I like the sun dried tomato here! The jamon isnt very salty and went quite well with the avocado! 4/5

Cheese w quince jam - I love this combination! The jam went so well with the cheese :) 4.3/5

Piquillo pepper w anchovies - I love piquillo peppers and this was good! I love the aroma of the pepper, and the anchovy was sort of like a back-up in this cos the star for me was the pepper! The boy and I both love this the most :) 4.6/5

The toast they use as the base is a little hard but still a tad crispy so its not that bad :) The toppings are really good though! There were 5 diff types on display for us to choose.

Cherry Flavoured Gazpacho
$6

This doesnt taste like cherry haha just tastes like tomato soup! Of course the good thing is that its served chilleddddd and its quite sour so its a v good appetiser!! That blob of white stuff is cream but its kinda semi-solid and doesnt really add much flavour to the soup. 4.2/5

Roast Scallops w Baby Leeks
$12

Plump scallops and at $12, this is quite a steal! Though this dish was kinda average for us as the scallop wasnt sweet 3.5/4

Roast French Pigeon Breast w Saffron Plums
$18

We asked for ours to be done rare and I think this was super good! Very tender meat with a nice aroma to it, mmm I ate a lot of this :) Plums tasted more like apricots to us haha but yes the pigeon's good! 4.7/5

Squid in its own ink
$12

This was so-so I feel, the squid didnt have much taste and the ink sauce, a little bland. The squid wasnt too chewy though which is good. 3.5/5

They serve a set lunch menu with a few tapas items from the dinner menu and for dinner, they serve the menu I've shown above! The set lunch changes weekly and its very affordable! $23++ for 2 courses and $28++ for 3!!!! Do check our their set lunch menu on the Facebook page!

Service there is okay, not very attentive/friendly but passable :) No complaints!

When we went at about 6.40pm, their happy hour was still on and its 1-for-1 house pours/Stella Artois! The house pour includes a red or a white wine. And its $10, so quite worth it I feel.

New Restaurant: Bomba

Now the craze in Singapore seems to be Spanish tapas restaurants! Bomba Paella Bar, as the name suggests, serves paella and is certainly serves more traditional Spanish food vs some of the tapas bars in Singapore! Do note that I visited Bomba on 27 Oct 2012 and the menu has since changed a little!

Quite small interior. Try and spot this counter that's particularly bright next to the huge ass painting at the background of the picture on the right. That's where you can find the "fresh" seafood of the day, pick what you like and the chef'll cook it for you! Alternatively you can refer to the black boards on top or ask the wait staff what's available.

White sangria!

La Plancha Razor Clams

Basically the method of cooking is grilling and these were super super plump!!!! Fat and fresh. 3.8/5

Plancha Carabeneros

V juicy prawns!! The meat is quite little though for a prawn this size! A little on the dry side for me but nicely seasoned 3.8/5

Arroz Negro
$35 (S)
A wet paella of squid ink, squid, dry sherry, fish stock, spring onions & black mushrooms

This was um a tad too salty for us? Its not the squid ink salty kind of salty, its just a slight overuse of salt? It was really wet no doubt, in a good way :) Little morsels of squid sprinkled throughout, not a bad rendition though. Oh yes, there are 3 sizes for the paella; small, medium and large, this is small! 3.6/5

Chilli Roasted Quail,
Golden Sultana Quinoa
$22
Chilli, lemon juice and honey marinade, caramelized grilled quail served with quinoa tabouleh

This was cooked over "loko mangrove charcoal spiced with apple branch wood chips" and I tell you its tastes good. Tender and nicely roasted! Like the slight charred taste from the roasting and the hints of caramelized sweetness! However I think they took this off the menu alr? Cos the current dinner menu posted on their website does not feature this dish anymore and the menu has also changed a little from when I visited! 4.2/5

Sea Bream

Not sure how this was cooked but it was one of the seasonal specials of the day. The two blobs of sauce went quite well w the fish, if only they gave us more so that we can eat the back part of the fish w the sauce as well! The red one's a tomato based paste (not like ketchup) and I forgot what the yellow one was heh. Anw the fish is really really fresh, not overcooked at all, juicy and yumz. Really nice to share this fish! 4.2/5

Piquillo Peppers Stuffed with Salted Cod Brandade
$14
Baked with maschego

I must say I really love the maschego cheese here! Its totally the star of the show! You can only taste hints of my lovely roasted piquillo pepper, the salted cod brandade... not really. Great to eat it when warm with that heavenly cheese~ 4.2/5

Clams, Sherry & Ham
$20
Stew of shallots, garlic, cubed ham, clams, sherry and parsely

A very normal dish of steamed clams I feel just that this has a lil more alcohol to it? Go for it if you're really hankering for clams. 3.5/5

Roasted King Scallops, Iberico Ham, Broad Beans
$22
Scallops a la plancha, with a stew of braised beans, dry ham and chicken stock

Scallops were really quite big but were a lil tasteless for me though nicely roasted. The big slice of ham is dried so doesnt taste like the jamon we eat, its thinner, slightly crispier and harder! 3.9/5

Langoustine Squid & Prawns Paella
$40 (S)
Seafood paella, cooked with tomatoes and seafood stock

This one really has a lot of ingredients!! I think there were 4 prawns, 3-4 clams and some squid in there.  This one's drier vs the squid ink and similarly a tad too salty for us. Quite flavourful though, 3.5/5

Bitter chocolate ice cream, sour dough bread and salted olive oil
$14

I think $14 for this is a lil expensive? The ice cream isnt really um cold haha and has a texture like a mousse? The white stuff you see on top is actually salt! But the ice cream is good though, really is q bitter, v yummy :) The olive oil didnt really add much to this dish, neither did the sour dough? 3.4/5

Do note that there is NO service charge at Bomba. The service that night was quite slow, we had to tell them quite a lot of times to refill our water. Our dessert took super long to come vs the oth main dishes which came quickly in succession. Though it was slow, they are polite and are helpful :)

Perhaps my expectations for Bomba were raised really high due to all the praise beforehand. After having visit it, I must must agree that the menu certainly looks darn good and perhaps its because I didnt try their special dishes like the suckling pig and the iberico cooked on the coal pit. But I did try the paella and well, firstly it was salty for us and secondly flavours just didnt shine through as strong as the ones we had in Spain so :/

Do note that your table will only be held for 15mins and that for reservations under 5 ppl, they require the table back within 1h 45mins!! They have a promotion going on called Plancha time so do check out their fb page for more updates! :)
