Tiferet Tea Room

This tea room has been opened for quite awhile but I only happened to chance upon it few months back and finally visited in Aug 2014. Its situated in a mall that I didn't know of till I visited this tea room! In a quiet corner, with a nice chill interior, it is quite a good place to wind down after a long day.

They specialise in teas of course and had a extremely wide selection. They serve cakes as well and are apparently home-made if I'm not wrong! Also they serve savouries like sandwiches etc but I didn't take a photo of that menu sorry!

N and I tried 2 cakes as well as their green tea and here's what we think about it!

Chocolate Therapy
9 layers of chocolate praline, dark chocolate sponge and milk chocolate ganache

Woah really 9 layers there and the layers are quite neat so kudos to whoever who made this! I loved that this was predominantly dark chocolate hence wasn't overwhelmingly sweet! Perhaps the crunchy praline layer could've been a little thicker/more layers cos the ganache + sponge was a little too much I felt. But overall it was a great great chocolate cake! Therapy indeed! :) 4.3/5

Matcha Azuki
Layers of light matcha sponge, matcha cream and red azuki beans

'cos they ran out of the cake in the cake chiller, they had to take this out from the freezer and so our cake was still semi-frozen when it was served to us haha they were v apologetic and told us to wait awhile before eating it but we couldn't resist the temptation! It was like eating an ice cream cake and as the frost slowly melted away, we could taste how it was actually like. Super soft dreamy mousse and sponge cake with a strong green tea taste! Great for green tea lovers :) 4.3/5

I forgot which green tea I drank but N and I both thought that there was nothing special to the tea :/ haha most likely cos we aren't connoisseus but anyhow they don't serve water so its best to get tea to go along with the cakes!

I'm sorry I don't remember the price range but the cakes were about $6+ or more, but the tea I honestly can't remember! The place is not crowded, is a good place to chill and has many magazines on the rack for you to read as you chill :) you get a view of east coast road as well haha

Also! In celebration of the new direction Nuffnang Sg is headed towards, I'd like to say, thanks to Nuffnang I've had many opportunities to be part of events, tastings etc and have met many new people and well have been allowed to step into the media world, even though my experience is just a fraction of that world, I'm really grateful for the opportunities that I've been given. The one I hold closest to my heart is the media event for Chefs for A Cause

Through this media event, I made new friends with other people in the media industry, I talked to extremely inspiring people who're behind this event and sampled amazing food :) Also I felt very privileged to be given the chance to help spread the word about such a worthwhile cause and was honestly very humbled and extremely heartened to know that kind souls still exist where they would do things for free for charity so that 100% of the proceeds will go to charity :)

So thank you @nuffnangsg #nuffnangsg #bloggerati and @bossming who started out this company :)

New Restaurant: Lady M Singapore

Please like my FB Page here!! Thanks! :)

Many have been waiting eagerly for Lady M to finally open in Singapore after announcements of it setting up shop here. Last Sunday (8 Sept), they finally opened! The boy and I went to try their cakes on 10 Sept, Tuesday and here's our experience!

The next few pictures show the cakes + tarts they had on display that day. I know for a fact that they rotate some of the tarts/cakes available as I've seen photos on Instagram of the "Banana Mille Feuille" which wasn't there that day when I went.

Their signature Mille Crepe cakes!

 Tarte aux Fruits

Its interesting how they use papayas and kiwis - more tropical fruits here! Its on an almond financier base. Was v tempted to order this!!

Strawberry Mille Feuille & Tarte a la Mangue

Thats the checkers board cake & strawberry shortcake

Gateau Nuage & Gateau aux Marrons (basically almond sponge cake w chestnut glaze)

On the right side: raspberry chocolate layer cake, mont blanc, eclair

Interior of the shop! There are quite a number of tables not pictured here. Many staff stay at the drinks area and they dont really look around/actively see if your plain water needs filling up and I had to ask them every single time to fill my water for me.

We had 4 cakes after lunch!! #gluttonsareus

Strawberry Mille Feuille
$8
Puff pastry, whipped cream with a hint of kirsch, sponge cake, strawberry jam, strawberries

Honestly, this was our least favourite cake that day! But dont worry, the other cakes/tart fared much better! Why? Because the puff pastry was not crispy anymore, a little soggy sadly. We much preferred Flor's Napolean! The cream was very yummy though! Cant really taste the strawberry jam nor discern any sponge cake. Unless you're really craving for puff pastry, I wouldn't suggest this. 3/5

Tarte a la Mangue
$7.50
Shortcrust pastry, passion fruit curd, mangoes

We were deciding between this tart or the fruit tart w almond base cos initially I thought this mango tart had an almond base too. BUT after seeing the "passion fruit curd", I immediately decided on this! We were SO glad I chose this in the end because this ranked TOP on our list out of the 4 items we tried!

Look at the passion fruit curd filling, its not the kind that would just flow out, instead its texture is more of something like the almond financier kinda base but with a rather strong taste + aroma of passion fruit! Its only very slightly sour but the aroma of the passionfruit is very discernible. We totally loved the flavours in this one because its SUPER refreshing! The sweet but not overly so mangoes + the sweet but slightly sour passionfruit curd + the buttery shortcrust just won us over. I think the coldness of the tart added to the yum factor! 4.8/5

Checkers Cake
$8
Checkerboard of vanilla + chocolate sponge cake. fresh whipped cream, dark chocolate ganache

I really love the dark chocolate ganache! Rich & decadent, it makes me want to eat the ganache all day long non-stop! I felt that the ganache was the star factor here bringing it all together. Honestly you cant taste the vanilla sponge cake at all as the ganache dominates here. The whipped cream provides a very nice contrast in textures + taste! I must say, their sponge cakes are really really fluffy & soft! Poofs away like a cloud in your mouth haha. Although this was a classic cake done well, we felt that we could've gotten such a cake at a cheaper price at some other places in Singapore. 4.2/5

Green tea Mille Crepe
No less than twenty lacy thin crepes, pastry green infused with green tea, powdered green tea

I have never tried the original Lady M in New York but a few of my friends who have said that this Singapore one is a little soggy & melts quickly compared to NY's and they prefer NY's version instead! The one we had was a tad soggy but still bearable I feel! I think I was just lured by the strong green tea taste in the silky pastry cream because I just couldnt stop eating this! This was the 2nd on our list out of the 4 cakes. Honestly, the crepes are really extremely thin and super soft, so it was q hard to just eat this with a fork as the layers were a little hard to cut through and we had to use a knife to cut it! Each mouthful of that wonderful pastry cream + the added matcha taste from the powdered matcha just made this crepe cake so much nicer!

All in all, the boy and I both thought that the cakes were of a rather good standard and we would certainly not mind going back again for more of their cakes! Hopefully they have the whole range of cakes stated in their website on rotation! I would love to try their Gateau Nuage which have had some good reviews on Instagram & their fruit tart which looks yummy :) Hopefully they can come up with more tarts like the mango one (which is not featured on their Lady M website)!

Service is quite splotchy. I ordered cakes from the counter and repeated it once to the guy there. And then this lady came over to our table to reconfirm our orders, but only 1/4 of the orders were correct. So we told her the correct orders, she reconfirmed and went off. When our cakes arrived, they gave us the classic vanilla Mille Crepe cake when we ordered the green tea one, so they had to send it back again. The rest of the cakes were correct though. Really hope such a thing wouldn't happen again! I've talked about the water issue above already.

Do note that there is service charge (10%) if you dine in! On the drinks menu it says there is service charge + GST (7%) but when we got our bill, idk why they only charged us service charge but not GST!

One thing I do not like is that they DO NOT put prices on their labels for the cake in the counter so it is rather annoying not knowing how much you've spent already/going to spend! Hopefully they have a good explanation for this/change their labels!

Lady M
Marina Square Shopping Mall #02-103
6 Raffles Boulevard
Daily 11am-9pm (heard their cake selection dwindles really quickly arnd 6ish 7pm so do go early if you want choices!)
If you're driving there, follow signs for "The Dining Edition" in the carpark cos thats where the shop is located at!
Opposite it is Pita Pan, nearby there's St Marc's, Hifumi. Its the other end of the mall, away from the cinema!

Food Tasting: New Menu at Stranger's Reunion!

Hi!

Thanks to Nuffnang, I was invited to taste Stranger's Reunion's new menu! I've never been to Strangers previously but have heard lots about it. They've recently expanded but according to a few of the bloggers there with me that day, the new area is less cosy/homely, more minimalistic and they didnt really like that feel!

Anyhow, here are some photos and a review of the food!

The exterior

Some interior shots below:

Too full that night to try their cakes but they look gooooooood! Melissa says that the carrot cake is quite good!

The new improvised menu! Sorry if its unclear! Some of the food portions below I believe are smaller portions of the actual size but the price I put there is the price of the actual sizing! I'll also put in brackets the 'category' the dish comes under!

Lotus Root Chips
with spicy aioli
(light bites)
$12.90

We had 2 tables of food tasters so 2 bowls of this and the taste + texture for both bowls were different!
Bowl 1: saltier + crispier
Bowl 2: less salty but more chewy & less crispy

So quality isnt consistent! They're really addictive though. Best if they can achieve crispy + less salty! But the texture + salt level differs from person to person. Some are okay w the salt level, some like the chewy one more, so it really depends man. The aioli isnt spicy at all! 3.7/5

Green tea
$8

Very light green tea fragrance

Iced latte (5.90)/mocha (6.90)

Egg Net Tempura Soft Shell Crab
with spicy kewpie mayo & corn in a brioche bun
(all day breakfast)
$21

The egg net tempura is basically fried egg! We felt that the soft shell crab wasnt crispy enough? It could possibly be due to us taking photos of the food then it becoming a lil soggy. Once again the mayo isnt spicy although it says so in the description but of course the mayo goes wonderfully well with the burger and just binds the tastes together I feel. The flavours are quite refreshing and doesnt feel oily despite the fried interior. Bun is rather fluffy though could be slightly more toasted for me.

Rockets are q dangerous cos many ppl dont like them! 3.6/5

Corn & Zucchini Fritters
with avocado, poached egg & spicy tomato relish
(all day breakfast)
$18 ($21.50 if you add bacon)

This photo is how the dish will look like if you order it (portion wise I am not sure)

But this was what we got instead for tasting! So I dont really know how it'll taste w the bacon + poached egg! You cant really taste zucchini in the fritter, more of the corn dominating. The tomato relish went q well with it and if you're afraid of avocados, the taste is somehow masked in this dish. This was an average dish imo 3.4/5

Crispy Pork Belly
with truffled mash, ginger beer, apple & date chutney
(from noon till late)
$24.90

This is their signature dish! And I think manyyyy of the bloggers + nuffnang staff agree!! All I could hear after they ate the pork skin was "mmmmm the skinnnnnnnnn" and people wanted more of the skin!!! Super crispy super fragrant :) The meat is tender and juicy, very flavourful too. This is a dish done well!

Didnt really taste dates in the chutney though, more like apple! Which I think went really well with the pork cos green apple is sour so I really like the contrast in taste! Perhaps a bit more green apple would be good :)

Truffled mash was not bad too! But pork totally overshadows it haha 4.4/5

And girls listen up!!! The guy said that they force out all the fats from the meat so dont worry about it!

THE SKIN

Za'atar-spiced Eggplant Fritters
with lemon yogurt
(light bites)
$12.90

Some people dislike the taste of eggplants but fret not, you absolutely cannot taste eggplant in this dish haha which is kind of a bad thing in my dictionary cos you dk what you're eating! All you taste is some spice that reminds you of Indian food and a bit of creaminess from the yogurt which doesnt taste of lemon. 2.8/5

12-hour Braised Lamb Shoulder Flat Bread
with quinoa tabouli & hummus
$19.50

I really liked this dish! Very middle eastern in concept and even after eating so much previously, I finished this dish! The lamb doesnt have the smelly lamb taste dont worry and it was tender + juicy and the spices wasnt too heavy. But I think a bit more ingredients for a wrap that size would be good! Again not sure the portions for the actual dish! 4.5/5

Truffle fries
with truffle aioli & parmesan cheese
$12.90

The girls at my table really loved the truffle fries!!! I thought the truffle taste could be a bit stronger though. 4.3/5

Buttermilk Waffles
with artisan greek yogurt & fresh fruit
$11.50

What most people come here for!!! The waffles were a little bit crispy at the edges but got soggy super fast! Didnt enjoy it as much as Wimbly Lu's but I finished it anyway, talk about being a pig! The greek yogurt is not as tart as the ones I've tried commercially. Wouldnt pay 11.50 for this though! 3.5/5

Buttermilk Waffles
with vanilla ice-cream & fresh fruit
$11.50

The vanilla ice cream is a little artificial tasting so I didnt really like it :/

Homemade jam

They made jam for us! I apologise but I have yet to try the jam but it was freshly made! Like it was still hot when they first put it out!

Service: I cant say anything about service cos it was just us two tables and it was an invited tasting. But the people there are friendly!!

Ambience: I think its okayish but not very cosy like what the other bloggers mentioned

Once again, thank you nuffnang!!! If not for nuffnang I wouldnt have been able to go for this tasting and wouldnt have met so many nice bloggers that night and made new friends! :)
