10 @ Claymore

Upon reading a few reviews about 10@Claymore's Plates of Treasure reviews, the boy and I decided that we'd to go down and give it a go! Boy were we glad we did (: We actually cancelled another reservation to make it for 10@Claymore, but glad to say, we both didnt regret our decision (:

We arrived promptly at 6.15pm and I suggest you arrive early 'cos thats when there's really nobody and you get to enjoy the food leisurely instead of feeling pressurized and being crowded w people!

The entrance

2 kinds of oysters - US and Fine de Claire oysters!

US ones were creamier and more plump vs French ones, saltier and thinner! So depends on what you like! The boy and I took one of each first and we decided we liked the creamier one more so asked for US ones on subsequent visits!! These are seriously FRESHLY SHUCKED in that they only open it when you tell them how many you want! Unlike some hotels which say freshly shucked oysters but the oysters are in fact alr opened and placed on ice for you to take!

Salad bar condiments

Quite wide array - lettuce, chickpea, marinated/pickled stuff, bell peppers, cherry tomatoes, carrots, corn, cucumber, olives etc. They provide a bowl for you to mix and create your own salad!

Seafood on ice!

Definitely highlight of the buffet! The boston lobsters were sooooo yummy! They were really really sweet and fresh, I couldnt stop eating them!! Mussels fresh as well, and so were the prawns!!! Took many servings of them (: Was really happy the lobsters had roe inside hehe. This itself is worth the price of the buffet already!

I happen to score a crab pincer but didnt see it subsequently!

I must say this is really well braised. Mushrooms and sea cucumber was so full of flavour of the rich broth and mushrooms were juicy and plump. My kind, totally. Ate them non-stop!!!

Tortilla wraps w veggie

Think mashed potato?

This soup was not bad! Creamy but not in a jialat way. Would have drank more if not for this being a buffet!

Breads were okay

Fried vermicelli - the boy said this was good! Didnt try though!

Plates of treasure: Chilean Ocean Sea Perch
Pea Sprouts, superior light soya broth

I loved this fish!!! It was light, though not as soft and oily as cod but it was cooked quite nicely (a tad overdone though) and mainly because it felt so light and healthy, I kept eating ordering it! The veg lends a nice crunch to this dish!

Plates of treasure: Pacific shark's fin casserole
Woody bamboo pith, boston lobster claw

The lobster claw's really small haha but served in this black dutch pot thing, looks rustic and makes it more interesting! Think this must have been good else the boy wouldnt have ordered more!

Sashimi and assorted sushi

Sashimi was fresh albeit slices being small, guess you could just take more if you want more anyway haha. But good thing is, and what I like is that they dont lay out everything at once or a lot of the seafood/sashimi at once but instead, when its almost finished, they replenish it! Think this ensures the freshness of the food!

Ham with pineapple chutney

This ham was good! It was nicely smoked, soft and doesnt taste very meaty, the sauce slightly tangy which went well with it. Rare kind of meat that I loved and finished!

Plates of treasure: US Angus Beef
Celery leek, sarawak black pepper sauce

The boy said the sauce was the only thing he could taste and the meat was tough :/

Tasmanian lamb
Highland asparagus, citrus-sesame reduction

The sauce tasted sweet, a little too sweet in fact, more than tart/tangy that we'd normally associate with citrus fruits. We didnt like the sauce so we scrapped it away and got beautifully done lamb (:

Dessert table

There were banana crumble tarts, banana cake, choc pistachio cake, raspberry panna cotta, pinapple cheese cake, fruit jelly, raspberry crumble, lemon cheesecake, brownie, muffin, creme brulee, blueberry slice, sago, etc

Fruits table
Watermelon, papaya, pineapple, banana, prune, apples, fruit salad, dragonfruit etc

Choc fountain condiments!

Assorted cookies, macarons, fruits, marshmallows etc

Macaron - the boy said not nice haha so I didnt try!

Out of everything here, I think only the banana crumble pie (bottom) was worth the calories. Mango pudding was not bad as well. Watermelon and pineapple were good, rest not nice.

Crepe station!

Fillings - peanut, durian (MUST-TRY!), cream, blueberry/raspberry compote, peanut butter, banana, etc

Durian crepe

Quite generous durian fillings, gotta eat it when its hot though! This is good if you like durian!

Banana crepe

The banana is cooked and drizzled with some sauce so its a little sweet but goes well w the crepe. We didnt opt for choc sauce on top! We tried it w the ice cream from another part of the buffet but it didnt go well tgt! The ice cream was lemongrass & ginger, quite nice on its own though! Not v strong lemongrass/ginger flavour but subtle hints of 'em. Quite refreshing! This crepe looks so diff from the durian one 'cos the chef kinda left it on the pan for too long but we like this better! Its sooo crispy at the sides! V loud crunch when you bite into it(:

Chocolate pudding thing

Hahaha the boy thought this was v good and kept eating! Its like a pudding below but w chocolate crunch on top!

Ice cream flavours

Self-service! With assorted toppings at the side

The berry ice cream isnt that great though :/

Fruit tart!

These only came out towards the end of the buffet, guess cos some of the desserts ran out? But to me, this was the best dessert of the night (Aside from crepes) though the tart was a little soggy, it was still nice and buttery, creme patisserie was good and fruits were ample in such a small tart! Loved it!

The boy and I both felt that this was veryyyyyy value for money at $52++ per pax given the fresh and wide variety of seafood available, mains are done quite well, desserts slightly weaker but crepes bring up the bar quite a bit and so do the fruit tarts.

We liked this that much that we're going back again tonight for the buffet! This time with the boy's parents hehe.

Service was quite prompt, though the paltes of treasures may take some time to be served! Wait staff varied, but most were friendly and smiley. Oh do note this is the one at Orchard and NOT the one near Suntec/Marina Square! This is behind Isetan Scotts/Shaw Centre!

Plates of Treasures
Ends 29 Feb 2012
Pan Pacific Orchard

Edit: when I went on Thurs 23Feb, there wasnt the crepe station but was replaced by a quite good penang laksa! The desserts were diff too, there was this yummy blueberry mousse cake, green tea mousse w red bean cream and durian crepe cake! The above post was on a Sunday night!

Japanese-inspired Afternoon Tea at Axis Bar and Loungeaf

Once I read about the Jap-inspired afternoon tea, I told the boy "LETS GO" and so we did! Sadly we didnt get the window seats but the sofa chairs behind the prime window seat spots gave us good views as well!

Coffee/tea menu

Choose one type! They serve TWG blends and mariage freres tea (which is France's oldest house of tea!)

Fuji yama
green tea from japan renowned for its delicate and exquisite aroma, rich in vit C

Not sure if its because I'm no tea expert but this tea tasted quite normal to me? Definitely not like Sakae's la. But like any you'd get from Japanese restaurants that are higher end vs Sakae-type. Good tea to wash down the sweetness from the high tea though!

French breakfast tea
black tea with rounded taste of malt and chocolate

The boy said he liked this!

Jams & cream for scones

Assorted savory pastries - chicken, bacon, spinach, mushroom

Mushroom pastry

This was not bad, pastry's a bit hard in general for all

Chicken pastry

Liked how this was a little salty, not the type of chicken pastry I'd expect! This was quite nice

3-tier afternoon tea set for 2

Assorted sandwiches

The ham&cheese sandwich used wholemeal bread, rest were white bread! Cucumber ones were normal tasting, layer of mayo below the cucumber I believe. All were quite normal tasting (the sandwiches)

Sweet treats 1

Sweet treats from Junior Pastry Sous Chef Masakatsu Oshima of Mandarin Oriental Tokyo

Raisin Scones

These were not bad, not as light as I'd like them to be but passable. 1 or 2 raisins at the bottom, rather fluffy interiors, the outsides arent crispy though.

Mugwort Choux with Soy Bean Cream

To be honest, this tasted like a normal choux puff to me? Didnt know it had such flavours till I saw it on the menu

Warabi Mochi
A bracken starch dumpling

The mochi itself has no taste, would recommend you to eat it with the bean!

Fruit cake

This fruit cake was not bad! Not much rum taste though. Cake was moist and crumbly. A little too many nuts at the bottom (as you can tell) makes it seem like you're eating nuts instead of fruit cake?

Creme brulee

Saw many specks of vanilla but no vanilla taste at all, mainly custard. Average

 Spicy tuna bun

Now this was quite nice! Tuna with a little hint of spicyness, I quite like this.

Smoked salmon

This was goood. At least for me because I generally find smoked salmon v salty? But this one wasnt that salty and went quite well w the mayo, herb and pastry!

Green tea macaron

This was CHEWYYYY. Chewiest macaron I've eaten and kinda in a bad way? Sticks to your mouth/teeth though green tea taste is rather strong.

Good view!

(L-R) Brown sugar rolled cake, sesame blanc manger, strawberry shortcake

Brown sugar rolled cake - this was not bad, quite unique taste! Soft roll

Sesame blanc manger - sesame taste was quite strong, its like a panna cotta

Strawberry shortcake - this was what the waitress said was good and no doubt it was! Fluffy soft cake, with rather soft strawberries that are easy to chew and yummy cream (:

Good views!

The other desserts on display at Axis for SGD12++ each!
Yuzu macaon, charcoal macaron, chilli chocolate cake, sakura and champagne jelly, green tea mousse, sakura and white chocolate mousse

Felt that it was sort of a letdown? The desserts werent that great, savory items werent spectacular either. Total bill was $68.25 for two. It was definitely a good place to laze the afternoon away though! V comfy sofa seats, awesome view of the waterfront area, nice aircon, magazines + newspapers to read. So unless you reallyyyyyy want an afternoon tea experience, and would pay for great views but average food, then go for this afternoon tea.

Service was generally good though, but some waitresses werent that smiley

Carrot Cake Hunt Round 1

Hello everyone!

Here's another comparison entry because I feel like I'm on the hunt for carrot cakes in Singapore haha. Its another one of my fav kind of cakes, love the cinnamon taste and crunch of the walnuts! And recently, many cafes seem to be serving carrot cakes! So I'm gonna aim to try all of 'em and come to a conclusion wrt my fav carrot cake!

Here's my criteria:

  • Must be a little bit crumbly and moist
  • Cinnamon taste
  • Generous with walnuts
  • Cream cheese icing must not be too sweet and cloying, doesnt overpower the carrot cake but complements it
  • Cake must be nice enough to be eaten on its own w/o icing!
So I've tried carrot cakes in a number of places:

Contender #1: Cedele
$6/slice
Credits to celededepot.com
Many say Cedele's is the best carrot cake they've tasted so far and love this cake, but I think that the standards have been dropping? Firstly, slices are getting smaller, and the walnuts in the cake itself getting lesser, and its getting a little dry? Not sure if that's because of comparison with other cakes or because the standards are really dropping but my most recent tasting of their carrot cake is Dec last year. I would say this is definitely not on my top carrot cake list for now. This used to be much nicer!! 3.5/5

Contender #2: 7th Manna
$4.50/slice

The best friend and I have heard some good reviews of their cakes and their short opening hours are such that we couldnt have a chance to try them while schooling! We happened to pass by them and they were opened so we happily went into the shop and tried the carrot cake! We both felt disappointed by the carrot cake because it tasted bland, no happy smiles after taking the first bite so yup. This was in Sept 2011 so not sure if anything changed now. 2.7/5
Click here for the review previously done on them (I lowered the ratings in this post 'cos since then I've ate oth carrot cakes and felt that in comparison, this doesnt deserve that rating given in the older post)

Contender #3: Kooka Cafe
(Think the cake was $6 or $6.50 per slice, ongoing promotion of cake + coffee for $7.50!)

If I'm not wrong, the yellow stuff are pineapples! There are a few recipes online adding crushed pineapples to the carrot cake batter, heard it makes it more moist? Well the cream cheese frosting here is different from normal cream cheese frostings I've eaten on carrot cakes, this one's less sweet and a little sour in fact? Have a small issue w the pineapple bits in the cake (guess I'm not used to it?) but the cake was not bad, quite moist and crumbly, walnuts were generous too. 3.5/5

Contender #4: All Good Things
(Cake was $6 or $6.50 also)

Disclaimer: this cake, when given to us, wasnt totally ready yet ie it was still supposed to be refrigerated for a bit more for the flavours to develop before putting it in the cake counter for sale but 'cos the boy and I were rushing for time and we waited quite a while for the cake, the very kind lady gave it to us and didnt charge us for us. So our opinion of it may not be the true reflection of how it tastes like when its ready!!
1) I liked the frosting, enough for me to eat quite a big portion of it tgt w the carrot cake (because honestly, most of the time I just try one bite of the carrot cake w the frosting and then proceed to eat it w/o frosting)
2) Rather generous w walnuts
3) Cake was moist, cinnamon taste could be a bit stronger though and a little more moist perhaps?
I shall make another trip down one day to try it when its truly ready for sale! 4/5

Contender #5: House Barracks Cafe Carrot Cake
Credits to House Barracks Cafe Dessert Menu
This one's goooooood. Had it quite sometime back in mid 2011 and I remember it to be v good (: Loved the addition of figs into the cake and it was well studded with walnuts too! Frosting was definitely not too sweet and kept to a thin layer, cake was moist and crumbly too. Though after a heavy meal, I gladly polished this off! Its given a 4 because I rmb the cake to be a tad sweet. 4/5

Contender #6: Homemade carrot cake by a home baker

This is the best carrot cake I've had so far!! The boy, someone who doesnt like carrot cakes (although I always make him eat 'em w me haha) loved this too!!! He gladly finished huge portions of this cake along w me HAHA. Fats 'r us. But wtv this is totally worth the calories!!!
1) Super moist and crumblyyyy mmmm.
2) Cinnamon taste was q strong but not overpoweringly so
3) LOVE how the frosting is thin and kept to a minimum so I can truly truly enjoy the carrot cake in all its glory (:
4) Frosting wasn't sweet at all, went v well w the cake!! One frosting that I finished (: and I think the only one thus far
5) V generous with walnuts
Till now I'm still missing this carrot cake. This was given to me by my Aunt whose friend gave it to her! I've got the contacts of the awesome lady who baked this cake and I'm planning on ordering from her for maybe my bday? I have a feeling she only does whole cakes (I mean which homebaker sells cakes by the slice right) so rather sad that I'd have to order a whole cake in order to enjoy this!!! For now, this is 5/5!

Carrot cake to try list
  1. Room For Dessert - Summertime Carrot Cake featured in Straits' Times 50 Yummiest Cakes
  2. Maison Ikkoku's carrot cake
  3. Coffeesmith's nude carrot cake
  4. Room. coffee. bar carrot cake (Previously room with a view)
  5. Calendar's carrot cake (people have said their's is the best in Spore!)
Any other places to recommend?
